Watermarking - Privacy
Activated Content Corp. is not in the business of building applications that invade consumer privacy
Digital watermarking is nothing more than a technology that allows for the insertion of auxiliary data into digital media content. It takes its place alongside other marking technologies like barcodes (electronic product identification), metal stamping (vehicle identification numbers), and adhesive stickers (product packaging and labeling).
Like these other technologies, digital watermarking can be used in a variety of ways, including general product identification, advertising and marketing, and specific product identification (like vehicle identification numbers).
Used in these ways, all of these technologies help communicate copyright ownership, authenticate products as genuine, deter counterfeiting, identify usage rules and help identify legitimate vs. counterfeit products. There are very few consumer product producers that would be willing or able to stay in business without the application of marking technologies.
However, all of the above marking technologies - digital watermarking included - can all also be used in inappropriately invasive ways. It all depends on the applications that are built around the marking technologies.
